The Unbelievable Story Behind Beyonce's 2012 Met Gala Dress
The pregnant singer will may be a no-show this year, but as the
first Monday in May approaches, may not to acknowledge the most epic moments
from one of the biggest night in fashion's past. Beyonce, of course, owns most
of them—remember her pale-pink latex ensemble from 2016? There was that high ponytail and naked dress combo
for the China: Through Looking Glass theme. Every year, she impresses (in mostly
Givenchy). And every year, you will see stylist Ty Hunter moving behind her, fixing
and fluffing her train on the famously steep, red carpert of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art.
Although Ty does not have any plans to attend
the star-studded extravaganza this year, we can never know. Bey could call him
day of and tell him that she wants to attend. She did it in 2012, after all.
It was Met Gala, and Bey decided that day that
she wanted to go," Ty narrated to our team.
Most stylists would balk
at the thought of prepping for such a high-profile event in less than 24 hours,
Queen Beyonce relayed a much more adamant attitude about attending. (Who you
could RSVP on such short notice!)
"It was as if we can, we go. If we cannot,
we will not," he said. The team was in the middle of rehearsing for an
upcoming tour, and there was very little time to plan. It was one of the first
times Bey would be seen in public after she had daughter Blue Ivy. Thank God
Givenchy made a dress for her for a prior event that we did not use."
The veteran stylist made a simple call into
the Parisian fashion house, they were able to expedite the gown back onto Bey’s
body.
The dress saved that day? A black, long-sleeved,
embellished, patches of see through dress that masterfully transitioned into a
purple, feathered train.
It was kind of the beginning of the illusion dress," Ty
said. “Yes, Beyonce was at the forefront of the naked dress movement.” (It fit
good. The dress did not really need anything else).
The veteran stylist did put in a quick call to
jeweler Lorraine Schwartz, who seems to have what we needed as at the time,"
a.k.a. a pair of diamond stud earrings. The rest was fashion history.
No one ever knew about the last-minute ensemble (until now).
Honestly, the "Formation" singer could've worn a sparkly paper bag
and it still would've worked.
A woman needs to be confident and comfortable,
he said. Bey has worn dresses that are really heavy and makes it look like a
feather."
Just in case celebrities are not Bey-level confident and do
not have a veteran stylist beside them, Ty's last tip will save the day: Wear
comfortable shoes. "Stuart Weitzmans—they emphasize a woman's arch and
look sexy enough," he recommended. "Those red steps are gorgeous."
